Pouring Into Students at Cedar Grove Middle School

Pulling up to Cedar Grove Middle School in DeKalb County was more than just another speaking engagement. It was a moment filled with purpose, urgency, and love for young people navigating environments that too often try to define their future before they even get a chance to choose it for themselves.
Inside the school walls, the energy was real. Students were present, engaged, and open. But behind that energy was a deeper reality that cannot be ignored. Many of these young people are growing up in communities impacted by gun violence, limited resources, and constant pressure that can easily pull them off track. That is exactly why this visit mattered.
The message delivered was not about hype or surface level motivation. It was about truth. Truth about the systems that exist, including the harsh reality that academic performance is often used to predict future outcomes in ways that can either open doors or close them too early. Students were challenged to understand how statistics are sometimes used to label them, and how narratives can be shaped around where they live, what they look like, or how they perform in school.
But the message did not stop there.
It shifted into empowerment.
Students were reminded that none of those labels define who they are. Education is not just a requirement, it is a tool for freedom. Responsible decision making is not just about avoiding mistakes, it is about protecting their future. And their potential is not something that has to be discovered later in life. It is already inside them right now.
One of the strongest themes of the day was breaking cycles. Too many young people are told, directly or indirectly, that their path is already decided. But the truth shared in that room was different. Cycles can be broken. Legacies can be rewritten. And the decisions made today can change the trajectory of entire families.
There was also a deep cultural reminder woven throughout the experience. A reminder of resilience, strength, and history. Even through generations of struggle, communities have found ways to create, build, and rise. That same resilience still exists in today’s students.
As the session closed, the focus was simple. Stay the course. Protect your future. Stay connected to positive influences. And most importantly, do not follow the path of limitation when a path of purpose is available.
The response from staff and leadership made it clear that this was not just another assembly. It was a moment of impact. A moment of perspective shift. A moment of planting seeds that could grow far beyond that day.
At Cedar Grove Middle School, the goal was not just to motivate students. It was to remind them that their lives matter, their choices matter, and their future is still wide open.
