PUT YOUR MASK ON FIRST, EDUCATOR!

So often in education we talk about focusing on the whole child. And we should. Our students deserve that. But for a moment, I want to shift the focus. I want to talk about the whole educator. The whole counselor. The whole administrator. The whole you.

Let me ask you something. If I asked you to raise your hand because you have a solid, consistent self care routine, how confident would you feel putting that hand up? Be honest. For many educators, self care is the first thing to disappear when the workload increases. It sounds good in theory, but in reality, it gets pushed to the bottom of the list.

You have heard it before. On every flight, the pilot says if the oxygen masks drop, you put yours on first. Not because you are selfish. Not because you do not care about the person next to you. But because you cannot help anyone else if you are not breathing yourself.

We are living in unusual times. You are not just navigating lesson plans and parent emails. You are navigating your own thoughts, emotions, health, and family responsibilities. On top of that, there is tension in the world. There are divisions. There is constant noise. And yet, every day, you show up ready to serve students.

That is not small. That is powerful.

Over the years, I have talked with educators who have won Teacher of the Year. High performers. Difference makers. And so many of them have told me the same thing. They gave their school their best and their family the rest. That breaks my heart.

This cannot be the season where you sacrifice yourself for applause or achievement. This must be the season where you prioritize you. Where you are present for your family. Where you take a day off and do not feel guilty. Where you protect your peace the same way you protect your students.

You are more than your classroom. You are more than your title. You are a human being who deserves rest, joy, and margin.

The best thing you can give your students is not a perfectly decorated classroom or a flawless lesson plan. The best thing you can give them is a healthy, whole, energized version of you.

So take the walk. Schedule the appointment. Turn the phone off. Laugh with your family. Protect your time.

Put your mask on first.

Because when you are good, everyone connected to you benefits.

And if this message hit home for you, I want you to take a few minutes and watch the full message I shared with educators. Let it encourage you. Let it challenge you. Let it remind you why you started in the first place.
