Stop Playing Small!

Nelson Mandela once said something that has stuck with me for years. He said, “There is no passion for playing small and settling for a life less than you are capable of living.” Think about that for a moment. No passion for playing small. No purpose in shrinking your dreams. No reward for settling for a life that does not match the greatness inside of you.
Sometimes people tell me, “Jeremy, you do the most.” I smile when I hear that because the truth is simple. I do the most because I want the most. Not just for myself, but for the people who believe in possibility. My biggest concern for many graduates and young leaders is not failure. My biggest concern is that they start believing they have already arrived.
Graduation is a beautiful moment. You worked hard for it. You pushed through late nights, tough assignments, and moments where you felt like giving up. You put on that cap and gown and you feel proud, and you should. But I want to challenge you with something important. This moment is not the finish line. This moment is the starting line.
Sometimes I ask graduates what they want to do next. They say things like, “I cannot wait to work at this restaurant,” or “I hope I can work for a media company one day.” And I always pause and ask a different question. Why stop there? Why not own the restaurant? Why not build the media company? Why not become the producer who creates stories that inspire millions?
Too often we shrink our dreams to fit what feels safe. We settle for a small version of what is possible because dreaming bigger feels uncomfortable. But the truth is that greatness rarely comes from playing it safe. Greatness comes from people who believe they can build something bigger than themselves and then put in the work to make it happen.
When I look at graduates sitting in their seats with their caps and gowns, I see more than a ceremony. I see potential. I see future entrepreneurs, creators, leaders, and innovators. I see people whose ideas could change communities and whose determination could impact generations. Your future is bright, but brightness alone is not enough. You have to believe in what is possible for your life.
Belief is powerful, but belief must be followed by action. Every dream you have will require discipline. Every vision you carry will require work. The world will not hand you what you deserve simply because you want it. The world will respond to what you are willing to work for every single day.
And let’s be honest. Your journey has not been easy. Many of you have faced challenges that people around you never saw. Some of you lost loved ones along the way. Some of you faced heartbreak. Some of you experienced moments where life felt heavy and uncertain. There were days when quitting felt easier than continuing.
But you kept going.
That resilience is proof that you are capable of more than you realize. There are people who started this journey with you who did not finish. Not because they were not talented, but because they stopped believing or stopped pushing forward. The fact that you are here today means something powerful about who you are.
So as you step into the next chapter of your life, refuse to play small. Refuse to limit your dreams to what feels comfortable. If you believe in your possibilities and commit to putting in the work every day, you can build a life that goes far beyond what you imagined.
Your future is not defined by what you wish for. Your future will be shaped by what you work for.
And the work starts now.
Share this message with your students today and challenge them to stop playing small, think bigger about their future, and commit to doing the work required to bring their vision to life.
